<br />
Steller app allows for the creation of small, perfect online photo books. They are delightful to make and to browse. There are books about travel, art, photography, design, recipes, and more. Steller offers a number of templates and a simple upload process. Since books are limited to 20 -25 pages, they are a perfect size. And it's free! Here's a Steller book I recently created about a photo self assignment called Urban Butterflies: <a href="https://steller.co/s/6kAJaNDBEa8" target="_blank">Urban Butterflies</a><br />

At our most recent Creative iPhone Adventures class, one of the participants asked about textures. I promised to think about it and write my process here.<br />
<br />
While I use Mextures app, A-layer app, and a host of others to "texturize" my photos, I occasionally use a texture I have photographed. For a long while, I have photographed interesting patterns in wood, stone, fabric and the like with the idea that I'd make my own textures. I might use one once and then forget about it.<br />
<br />
Over time, as I've organized and keyworded my photos in Lightroom (a huge task and not for the faint of heart), I've put these texture photos into a smart collection. I decided that now is the time to dust them off, so here are a few that I apped in Snapseed - adding structure, lightening the center, and just generally making them look like an interesting substrate. Enjoy.<br />
<br />
Sitting in a restaurant, I spied this interesting glass texture on a room divider. I took the color out in Snapseed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
In the Grand Canyon, there are these sculpted rock formations that I just love. This is the original color.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also like it with the color changed in Color Thief app.</div>

Alas, I can't remember where I got this one - I think it is rock. <br />

<br />
This is a beautiful marble on a wall in the Madison, Wisconsin capitol building. It's almost a photograph just as is.<br />
<br />

Lauhala is woven from the hala or pandanus tree - it's perfect for layering with hula or Hawai`iana images. <br />

I became enamored with this tire tracks in sand. I might clean it up a little more before I use it. Or maybe not.<br />

<br />
I found this on a shed in a botanical garden in Honolulu. Love the color and rust.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Eventually, you'll start seeing textures everywhere once you decide you are interested in creating your own. Of course, if you google textures, you will find more options than you can imagine using - French Kiss has some yummy ones. And there are lots of free ones as well.<br />
<br />
Next post, we'll deal with "making" textures as opposed to simply finding them as I did here. Happy apping!Lynette Sheppardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02896463175847071518noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2213053686115559075.post-75280473215623052552016-10-08T16:02:00.001-07:002016-10-08T16:02:52.052-07:00Abstract Steps for Pastel DreamJust finished a fantastic iPhone Creative Adventures class with Teri Lou Dantzler and a bunch of really talented participants. In response to a request by one of them, I am outlining the steps I took for the abstract I call Pastel Dreams. Here's the process to the best of my recollection:<br />
<br />
I started with this photo; it's either a pink painted wall or a texture I had already. I then upped the structure and saturation to the nth degree in Snapseed.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w92pr4mJMZI/V_l1awplOAI/AAAAAAAACSU/O0ZnN4WrOE8s6f0gg2TNHGClHf_IBI3xwCEw/s1600/IMG_2627.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w92pr4mJMZI/V_l1awplOAI/AAAAAAAACSU/O0ZnN4WrOE8s6f0gg2TNHGClHf_IBI3xwCEw/s640/IMG_2627.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Next I went into Pixite's app Fragment, which added the circular shapes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AzDtU7_ODUQ/V_l1axLeQtI/AAAAAAAACTQ/vejGbk6QYfkRMSxa_zr3sJgT1icyxVIDACEw/s1600/IMG_2628.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AzDtU7_ODUQ/V_l1axLeQtI/AAAAAAAACTQ/vejGbk6QYfkRMSxa_zr3sJgT1icyxVIDACEw/s640/IMG_2628.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Fragment again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/--ObGjujJYnY/V_l1bIvKe8I/AAAAAAAACTQ/E0ri1N0hdMsXSN5wOC5R_yaFJFTrykEXgCEw/s1600/IMG_2629.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/--ObGjujJYnY/V_l1bIvKe8I/AAAAAAAACTQ/E0ri1N0hdMsXSN5wOC5R_yaFJFTrykEXgCEw/s640/IMG_2629.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Fragment again.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OFvr1M4yO5o/V_l1bgcHdHI/AAAAAAAACTQ/SN4qb8CkrDwQ_VNlHcbZisrXlrT7-N0GgCEw/s1600/IMG_2630.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OFvr1M4yO5o/V_l1bgcHdHI/AAAAAAAACTQ/SN4qb8CkrDwQ_VNlHcbZisrXlrT7-N0GgCEw/s640/IMG_2630.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Fragment another time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E_tmi2sRMOM/V_l1cMmvOSI/AAAAAAAACTQ/xjy-LJ6Ko50iyn056lftg0X8iFXPvBdngCEw/s1600/IMG_2631.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E_tmi2sRMOM/V_l1cMmvOSI/AAAAAAAACTQ/xjy-LJ6Ko50iyn056lftg0X8iFXPvBdngCEw/s640/IMG_2631.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Fragment once more added the triangle in the center.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VY2TVDCY8Ng/V_l1ccMXrdI/AAAAAAAACTQ/0W0YVc9EHEcNo-C6iVGAtN3XXxziIwZPwCEw/s1600/IMG_2632.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VY2TVDCY8Ng/V_l1ccMXrdI/AAAAAAAACTQ/0W0YVc9EHEcNo-C6iVGAtN3XXxziIwZPwCEw/s640/IMG_2632.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Next I went into Matter app for the shape at the bottom right.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VKx_HgKjuuk/V_l1csBV59I/AAAAAAAACTQ/K98LGC3TTE8tIlGauHnK7f7aSyfwxYa2QCEw/s1600/IMG_2633.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VKx_HgKjuuk/V_l1csBV59I/AAAAAAAACTQ/K98LGC3TTE8tIlGauHnK7f7aSyfwxYa2QCEw/s640/IMG_2633.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Matter again for bottom left shape.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qnfVQFqqCf4/V_l1c9NRlXI/AAAAAAAACTQ/qwsrduk2YYw3VLCyPR3zwxKUyMidMjvkwCEw/s1600/IMG_2635.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qnfVQFqqCf4/V_l1c9NRlXI/AAAAAAAACTQ/qwsrduk2YYw3VLCyPR3zwxKUyMidMjvkwCEw/s640/IMG_2635.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Lightened in Shift app.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-StkNSdw7aQo/V_l1dawGV5I/AAAAAAAACTQ/b9vdoD-abWgzt6vamIbjtoY_BcNyO9HsACEw/s1600/IMG_2636.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-StkNSdw7aQo/V_l1dawGV5I/AAAAAAAACTQ/b9vdoD-abWgzt6vamIbjtoY_BcNyO9HsACEw/s640/IMG_2636.jpg" width="640" /> </a></div>
I added bubbles (because they seemed right somehow) in an app called Paint FX. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9EYq2D0wv88/V_l1dhAbX6I/AAAAAAAACTQ/0u6WZyf0krYxFa8hNFauWPOiURhU4aQuACEw/s1600/IMG_2637.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9EYq2D0wv88/V_l1dhAbX6I/AAAAAAAACTQ/0u6WZyf0krYxFa8hNFauWPOiURhU4aQuACEw/s640/IMG_2637.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I added lines at the bottom with Lory Stripes app and the unicorn from Simple app. (This is a free app that has many of the effects in Master FX app which I usually use for my little additions. Only trouble is that it puts the word Simple on it - see bottom right.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yKH6G9in3q0/V_l1d2IXMfI/AAAAAAAACTQ/Hu8SL2_SVuYpNKN2ER2gsz2zJyS6SH2BwCEw/s1600/IMG_2638.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yKH6G9in3q0/V_l1d2IXMfI/AAAAAAAACTQ/Hu8SL2_SVuYpNKN2ER2gsz2zJyS6SH2BwCEw/s640/IMG_2638.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
So I used TouchRetouch app to remove the word Simple.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D-0AYqLg5R0/V_l1eKzvafI/AAAAAAAACTQ/4aSAhhTIUgUk1IXuaA54BegsB3Z4OpjqgCEw/s1600/IMG_2639.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D-0AYqLg5R0/V_l1eKzvafI/AAAAAAAACTQ/4aSAhhTIUgUk1IXuaA54BegsB3Z4OpjqgCEw/s640/IMG_2639.jpg" width="640" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Took it back into Fragment - didn't like it. It distorted the outline of the face I saw lower right and just generally messed it up as far as I could see.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4TSzIX4a4KM/V_l1eU0IJkI/AAAAAAAACTQ/kGvoXIPSXVI4lUKbVtftVdxdo6Vp7TSeACEw/s1600/IMG_2640.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4TSzIX4a4KM/V_l1eU0IJkI/AAAAAAAACTQ/kGvoXIPSXVI4lUKbVtftVdxdo6Vp7TSeACEw/s640/IMG_2640.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Went back to the earlier version and called it a day. It's done when it's done. I titled it "Pastel Dream".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fSl8lkdb4OY/V_l1fMSDFgI/AAAAAAAACTQ/007a8EBSiBY-0WCa7EVRnKOrh0CdMIxFQCEw/s1600/IMG_2643.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fSl8lkdb4OY/V_l1fMSDFgI/AAAAAAAACTQ/007a8EBSiBY-0WCa7EVRnKOrh0CdMIxFQCEw/s640/IMG_2643.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

I can tell you that I most frequently use these apps in creating them: Matter, Fragment, Tangent, and Shift (all Pixite apps); also Master FX, Alien, Sky, Alayer for textures, and Glaze. Rarely do I use them all for one photo, but usually some combo thereof. I will say that when I start, I have no idea where I am going. It's a surprise to me every time.<br />
<br />
Here are the steps to Kachina Echoes. Enjoy and I look forward to seeing your creations.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m4ZxpQHvE9E/VhKejG4ukyI/AAAAAAAACPY/AV65WBhfm6Y/s1600/IMG_8317.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m4ZxpQHvE9E/VhKejG4ukyI/AAAAAAAACPY/AV65WBhfm6Y/s640/IMG_8317.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I started with a photo of calla lilies that I've posted previously and took it into Tiny Planet for this rendition.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TNGfwhin-Tc/VhKejNaR7RI/AAAAAAAACPo/fe0nw7DU_Wg/s1600/IMG_8487.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TNGfwhin-Tc/VhKejNaR7RI/AAAAAAAACPo/fe0nw7DU_Wg/s640/IMG_8487.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Next, I went into Matter app and chose this object (I almost always get rid of the shadow).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-82sr6oA2RM4/VhKejAWgmaI/AAAAAAAACPw/c_btBVPyAqU/s1600/IMG_8488.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-82sr6oA2RM4/VhKejAWgmaI/AAAAAAAACPw/c_btBVPyAqU/s640/IMG_8488.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I then chose another object in Matter and came up with this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IXDsAt1yoxA/VhKej-167fI/AAAAAAAACP4/xRlo3BpBj_o/s1600/IMG_8489.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IXDsAt1yoxA/VhKej-167fI/AAAAAAAACP4/xRlo3BpBj_o/s640/IMG_8489.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I took the photo into Fragment which added these shapes and changed the color as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uLzm2piBzs0/VhKekVRyK4I/AAAAAAAACQA/5EUJFtEloDc/s1600/IMG_8491.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uLzm2piBzs0/VhKekVRyK4I/AAAAAAAACQA/5EUJFtEloDc/s640/IMG_8491.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Fragment again - it has the feel of Japanese paper cranes I've seen at Manzanar, the internment camp in California that is now a National Historic site. I'm wondering if this will turn out to be cranes or a kimono.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-adzRta3kaEI/VhKek1PIJrI/AAAAAAAACQE/P-vpvG5a3Fg/s1600/IMG_8492.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-adzRta3kaEI/VhKek1PIJrI/AAAAAAAACQE/P-vpvG5a3Fg/s640/IMG_8492.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I Fragment it again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t2OWcqQs_Wc/VhKelQdA-yI/AAAAAAAACQQ/ABzyeTBd-Rw/s1600/IMG_8493.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-t2OWcqQs_Wc/VhKelQdA-yI/AAAAAAAACQQ/ABzyeTBd-Rw/s640/IMG_8493.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
And again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K7M4afl5M88/VhKel8_GNpI/AAAAAAAACQU/MPO281MOfjs/s1600/IMG_8494.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K7M4afl5M88/VhKel8_GNpI/AAAAAAAACQU/MPO281MOfjs/s640/IMG_8494.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
And one more time - now I am seeing the Kachina face and I feel where this might be going.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-N3GBmEsSV40/VhKema26hhI/AAAAAAAACQg/RvEi-pV7gFg/s1600/IMG_8495.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-N3GBmEsSV40/VhKema26hhI/AAAAAAAACQg/RvEi-pV7gFg/s640/IMG_8495.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I take it into Glaze for painting look - I don't like it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cbX16mWZ86k/VhKen47trsI/AAAAAAAACQ4/tFu9HWQQVzY/s1600/IMG_8498.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cbX16mWZ86k/VhKen47trsI/AAAAAAAACQ4/tFu9HWQQVzY/s640/IMG_8498.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I go back to the face and change the color palette in Shift app. Better.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v1RbeclM6RM/VhKepXNvOkI/AAAAAAAACRM/HxAVjXz1Q8c/s1600/IMG_8507.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v1RbeclM6RM/VhKepXNvOkI/AAAAAAAACRM/HxAVjXz1Q8c/s640/IMG_8507.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I change the color again in Shift. I'm liking it more and more.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qpWh1hMFjfw/VhKep4l1hRI/AAAAAAAACRY/wapqOQ-6hcg/s1600/IMG_8508.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qpWh1hMFjfw/VhKep4l1hRI/AAAAAAAACRY/wapqOQ-6hcg/s640/IMG_8508.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I add a texture in Alayer, which also shifts the color a bit. It feels very Southwest in origin to me now.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--xW3cVspQb0/VhKeqdC3VcI/AAAAAAAACRc/TSuvGT1gdRQ/s1600/IMG_8509.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--xW3cVspQb0/VhKeqdC3VcI/AAAAAAAACRc/TSuvGT1gdRQ/s640/IMG_8509.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
One more layer of texture in Alayer and I add a white vignette - not sure if I got it in Snapseed or PS Touch, but one of those. It feels complete to me now.<br /><br />
<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Many of you know that I have disappeared down a giant rabbit hole these past couple of weeks exploring abstraction with the iPhone. I have a feeling that I won't be emerging into the light of day anytime soon, however I promised to show my steps in creating these, so here goes.<br />
<br />
I was shopping and noticed the pepper display in the produce section. I thought the colors might make a good base for an abstraction, so I snapped it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GeGxMCYLFn0/VcZKYK4AzvI/AAAAAAAACOA/jzuW4EyIk9k/s1600/IMG_5950.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GeGxMCYLFn0/VcZKYK4AzvI/AAAAAAAACOA/jzuW4EyIk9k/s640/IMG_5950.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Next I took it into Glaze app and chose a glaze that kept the color but made the photo much less recognizable.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5kskL0AUBM8/VcZKawKd3II/AAAAAAAACOM/pKpAEuPRw7Q/s1600/IMG_5951.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5kskL0AUBM8/VcZKawKd3II/AAAAAAAACOM/pKpAEuPRw7Q/s640/IMG_5951.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Now that it was pure color, I decided to crop out just a section of the photo to use as my base. I used Snapseed to crop freestyle.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yDlhmnmQ0EM/VcZKW0RtE6I/AAAAAAAACN4/BCVoVaLEETw/s1600/IMG_5952.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yDlhmnmQ0EM/VcZKW0RtE6I/AAAAAAAACN4/BCVoVaLEETw/s640/IMG_5952.JPG" width="440" /></a></div>
<br />
I took it into Matter app and chose one of the styles, expanded it with my fingertips on the base until it looked like I wanted it too. I never know exactly what is going to look good to me in Matter until I do it, so there are many trial and error bits that I do not save. I liked this next one so I saved it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4USVshG9S-A/VcZKbafOWAI/AAAAAAAACOU/z7iaE1fP0f8/s1600/IMG_5953.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4USVshG9S-A/VcZKbafOWAI/AAAAAAAACOU/z7iaE1fP0f8/s640/IMG_5953.JPG" width="440" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Now it was getting interesting. It felt "spacelike" to me, like a wormhole. (I have no idea what a wormhole might look like, by the way.) Next, I brightened it in Snapseed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9bTOgmX1qe8/VcZKbuK2oYI/AAAAAAAACOY/ctxzEXmIIW8/s1600/IMG_5954.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9bTOgmX1qe8/VcZKbuK2oYI/AAAAAAAACOY/ctxzEXmIIW8/s640/IMG_5954.JPG" width="440" /></a></div>
<br />
I felt that I needed a "space" object, so next went into Alien Sky app. I tried some stars, even some galaxies, but I didn't like them. I inserted a Saturn like planet, which I liked very much.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4dgpwyv0zRk/VcZKcfXsHAI/AAAAAAAACOg/4yKNbwhH8ZQ/s1600/IMG_5956.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4dgpwyv0zRk/VcZKcfXsHAI/AAAAAAAACOg/4yKNbwhH8ZQ/s640/IMG_5956.JPG" width="440" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Now, the photo is coming together for me. I then took it into an app called Shift to add some texture. The effect is subtle, but I really liked it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EtGmI5FvbsQ/VcZKdTGE4yI/AAAAAAAACOo/XrsrHbH6uA4/s1600/IMG_5957.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EtGmI5FvbsQ/VcZKdTGE4yI/AAAAAAAACOo/XrsrHbH6uA4/s640/IMG_5957.JPG" width="440" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Next I added another texture and vignette filter from Shift. It was not what I was looking for but interesting enough that I saved it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UmPpbBSpZp0/VcZS8UG7YmI/AAAAAAAACO0/rHd3W0JMZGE/s1600/IMG_5958.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UmPpbBSpZp0/VcZS8UG7YmI/AAAAAAAACO0/rHd3W0JMZGE/s640/IMG_5958.JPG" width="440" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Finally, I revisited an old favorite app called Laminar (formerly IRIS) and used the Space texture to add a smattering of stardust. I am happy with the final result. I look forward to seeing what you all do with your own abstractions.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q6bhoDyX4qw/VcZS8_NxfvI/AAAAAAAACO8/CUjvaeSMQU8/s1600/IMG_5959.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q6bhoDyX4qw/VcZS8_NxfvI/AAAAAAAACO8/CUjvaeSMQU8/s640/IMG_5959.JPG" width="440" /></a></div>

I often forget this, mainly because I shoot so much on my phone that I barely have time to app anything else. But I have vowed to change that after seeing artist Katrina Pruett's latest offerings. Check these out:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tbe0BdICnOA/VamHphecMVI/AAAAAAAACNM/WnPNwOMDUIU/s1600/IMG_3614.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tbe0BdICnOA/VamHphecMVI/AAAAAAAACNM/WnPNwOMDUIU/s640/IMG_3614.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
Katrina says that she used so many apps that she is hard pressed to remember exactly which ones are responsible for the lovely looks here. She is pretty sure that <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stackables-layered-textures/id704236938?mt=8" target="_blank">Stackables</a> is one of the texture apps she used. I love <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stackables-layered-textures/id704236938?mt=8" target="_blank">Stackables</a> too - if you haven't tried the app, you should.<br />

I took some of my archived bird of paradise photos, printed them on a non-professional ink jet printer on plain printer paper (not photo paper), and used water with a brush to "paint" them. The ink blurs like watercolor paints.<br />
<br />
Then I rephotographed the finished watercolor images in HIpstamatic using Dreamcanvas. I further apped them in Snapseed and Camera+. I'm not sure these are better than painting in an app like PhotoViva, but I really like the end result and plan to do some more soon. Try your own experiment and send it to me - I'd love to see and share it.<br />

Taking his advice to heart, I began photographing a series of single flowers that were hidden in plain sight - what I termed Peek-a-boo blossoms. Here's the first sampling of an ongoing self assignment. (BTW Check out <a href="http://huiho.org/">huiho.org</a> for more info on <a href="http://johnbarclayphotography.com/" target="_blank">John Barclay</a> and <a href="http://www.jonathankingston.com/" target="_blank">Jonathan Kingston's</a> annual photo seminar with guest artists Dewitt Jones and Rikki Cooke.)<br />

A grouping of three palm trees caught my eye - I love palm trees and I could already foresee multiple app permutations.<br />
<br />
I started with Snapseed and HDR art for the first iterations.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--6LxhAWJpAU/U8Fu4q1EfGI/AAAAAAAACIQ/j27hkheB2vg/s1600/IMG_5585.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--6LxhAWJpAU/U8Fu4q1EfGI/AAAAAAAACIQ/j27hkheB2vg/s1600/IMG_5585.jpg" height="640" width="512" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gWAQ7dvNERA/U8Fu451B5BI/AAAAAAAACIY/UgG4xZ30GNA/s1600/IMG_5587.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gWAQ7dvNERA/U8Fu451B5BI/AAAAAAAACIY/UgG4xZ30GNA/s1600/IMG_5587.jpg" height="640" width="512" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5StUD7B5IqY/U8Fu4_SzrGI/AAAAAAAACIU/j7pnZPPJbaE/s1600/IMG_5588.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5StUD7B5IqY/U8Fu4_SzrGI/AAAAAAAACIU/j7pnZPPJbaE/s1600/IMG_5588.jpg" height="640" width="512" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T3nRpZMmchY/U8Fu5fkOF1I/AAAAAAAACIc/8B_cLP4mNlg/s1600/IMG_5589.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T3nRpZMmchY/U8Fu5fkOF1I/AAAAAAAACIc/8B_cLP4mNlg/s1600/IMG_5589.jpg" height="640" width="512" /></a></div>
<br />
Next I used Modern Grunge for this interpretation.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0q7OAr3UdKU/U8FvJqLuLPI/AAAAAAAACIw/U0EMoWxLTB0/s1600/IMG_5592.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0q7OAr3UdKU/U8FvJqLuLPI/AAAAAAAACIw/U0EMoWxLTB0/s1600/IMG_5592.jpg" height="640" width="512" /></a></div>
<br />
I went to an old favorite app for this one: FotoMuse.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4j3KG4S-PJs/U8FvVVBEhGI/AAAAAAAACI4/zI82U3SbIAA/s1600/IMG_5596.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4j3KG4S-PJs/U8FvVVBEhGI/AAAAAAAACI4/zI82U3SbIAA/s1600/IMG_5596.jpg" height="640" width="512" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally, I dipped into Old Photo Pro for this very cool look.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rL6JxmVlgPE/U8FvlNlGB8I/AAAAAAAACJA/pGpwIXV1Nj0/s1600/IMG_5599.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rL6JxmVlgPE/U8FvlNlGB8I/AAAAAAAACJA/pGpwIXV1Nj0/s1600/IMG_5599.jpg" height="640" width="512" /></a></div>
I don't have a favorite - I pretty much like them all - and the 10 others that are still sitting on my iphone.Lynette Sheppardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02896463175847071518noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2213053686115559075.post-42833927701270666852014-06-24T14:27:00.001-07:002014-06-24T14:27:25.022-07:00Abstract Expressionism in A Colorado TownThe town of Wray, Colorado has wonderful architecture preserved in its downtown area. Dewitt and I stopped there on our way back to Denver from the eastern part of the state and just wandered around, photographing. (After a great latte and bagel sandwich at the coffee place).<br />
<br />
I love the abstract expressionists like Rothko. (I know they aren't everyone's cup of tea, but I seriously could stare at some of those minimalist paintings forever.) Anyway, I kept seeing details in the vintage buildings - here are a few iphone pix. All are straight shots, optimized in Snapseed app.<br />

Dewitt and I and two close friends went beachside to check out the action.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A perfect day for paddling - apped with Snapseed. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2_g9Uy_xrFI/U4E4lW-BfyI/AAAAAAAACG0/1EjyF3VW0lU/s1600/IMG_3689.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2_g9Uy_xrFI/U4E4lW-BfyI/AAAAAAAACG0/1EjyF3VW0lU/s1600/IMG_3689.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Strong, buff paddlers pick up their canoes like they are toys. Which they might look like on the surface of the sea between islands.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XJ_48LVZhyE/U4E4S0ydaBI/AAAAAAAACGk/-XRCiOcsGwo/s1600/IMG_3657.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XJ_48LVZhyE/U4E4S0ydaBI/AAAAAAAACGk/-XRCiOcsGwo/s1600/IMG_3657.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My favorite shot of the day is of this woman reading quietly while the hubbub of the race goes on around and before her. Snapseed, Waterlogue, and Blender to combine painted image with the optimized original.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Dewitt and I had good friends visiting, so we visited the Kapuaiwa Palm Grove for sunset. The sunset was more pastel than dramatic red and orange, which made for a kind of quiet beauty.<br />
<br />
This first photo is a Hipstamatic shot with John S and Dreamcanvas. Upped saturation and sharpness in Snapseed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WvfN5aeGePI/U214tn7XkAI/AAAAAAAACF4/uBg01MI01_w/s1600/IMG_3315.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WvfN5aeGePI/U214tn7XkAI/AAAAAAAACF4/uBg01MI01_w/s1600/IMG_3315.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I used You Gotta See This to make this collage of the palm trees. (A freaky cool app that Jack Davis turned me on to years ago - I am rediscovering old apps! Optimized in Snapseed and Camera+.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l7eUpVcvMCM/U214uyZQt1I/AAAAAAAACF8/QKDddfuZSjA/s1600/IMG_3318.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-l7eUpVcvMCM/U214uyZQt1I/AAAAAAAACF8/QKDddfuZSjA/s1600/IMG_3318.JPG" height="514" width="640" /></a></div>
I used the same combo of apps for this view of the calm sea at sunset. Frame was added in Crop N Frame, which is a terrific framing app.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-juCmNfq1pqc/U214yO1T6VI/AAAAAAAACGE/mBg1ou40IQs/s1600/IMG_3337.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-juCmNfq1pqc/U214yO1T6VI/AAAAAAAACGE/mBg1ou40IQs/s1600/IMG_3337.JPG" height="448" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Brushstrokes added an abstract painterly look to this same photo. I like them both.<br />

On arrival day, we gave ourselves the assignment to find art on site at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. After all, we genuinely believe there is beauty everywhere. Here are a few of the shots I “found”. All were optimized in Snapseed and Touch Retouch.<br />

This app "steals" the color from another photo (or even a web page) and applies it to the one you choose. That does not sound as freaky cool as the app really is! You have to try it. And I can't believe that you won't be as addicted to it as I am!<br />
<br />
Here is an example of a photo I took on the beach in Ventura, CA. Now, I like this photo as is. I LOVE it in its new color permutations. Check this out.<br />
<br />
The starfish was lovely in its imperfection, one shortened arm, twirling in the sand. All I did to the original was to optimize it in Snapseed (tune image and details.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nME1PtG-sUc/UwJ1U1zC7cI/AAAAAAAACDo/Lw-C3xpxolE/s1600/IMG_0346.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nME1PtG-sUc/UwJ1U1zC7cI/AAAAAAAACDo/Lw-C3xpxolE/s1600/IMG_0346.jpg" height="486" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I brought it into Color Thief and started zipping through the pix on my Camera Roll (this is a highly addictive part of the process. Like slot machine wheels going past, adding color instead of coins.) These were my favorites.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FFR-KTp53lw/UwJ15sp8FQI/AAAAAAAACDw/erM4MVCx6Q0/s1600/IMG_0350.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FFR-KTp53lw/UwJ15sp8FQI/AAAAAAAACDw/erM4MVCx6Q0/s1600/IMG_0350.jpg" height="486" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V_d6s-4jrog/UwJ17C0a9WI/AAAAAAAACD4/cBgXq-_bdgs/s1600/IMG_0352.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-V_d6s-4jrog/UwJ17C0a9WI/AAAAAAAACD4/cBgXq-_bdgs/s1600/IMG_0352.jpg" height="486" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sBkhhvSztfA/UwJ18P1vhMI/AAAAAAAACEA/0d7TfggFar8/s1600/IMG_0738.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sBkhhvSztfA/UwJ18P1vhMI/AAAAAAAACEA/0d7TfggFar8/s1600/IMG_0738.jpg" height="486" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My all time favorite of the starfish color renditions was this one, which I posted on social media sites. I called it Pirouette.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IJAw0GrMrIg/UwJ2Y9q-klI/AAAAAAAACEI/UR2Du3KJo9g/s1600/IMG_0354.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IJAw0GrMrIg/UwJ2Y9q-klI/AAAAAAAACEI/UR2Du3KJo9g/s1600/IMG_0354.jpg" height="486" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And now I find out that they have an app for the Mac - oh joy, oh rapture. I'm heading for the app store right now. Oh, and did I mention that of course, it saves full resolution? It doesn't get any better than this.Lynette Sheppardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02896463175847071518noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2213053686115559075.post-8979072595592174802014-01-30T15:47:00.003-08:002014-01-30T15:49:30.091-08:00Instant Gratification with InstaFusion AppI love collaging and combining multiple images. I have most of the collage apps and use them in various situations depending on the look I want. Seriously, I did not think there could be another interesting app for image combining - that is, an app that offers new options other than the zillions I already have.<br />
<br />
Then the TechBla folks came out with InstaFusion. And yes, it is something new under the sun! It has features like Unistrip (yep, puts a strip of a photo in another, very cool.) Radial Blend is another cool mode. There are too many intriguing aspects to show them all here. Here are just three made with the same two source images.<br />
<br />
This first image combines two images of Mardi Gras past: a mannequin wears an brightly colored ornate costume and a sequined clock approaches midnight. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wF7r5xVs-Ig/UurdAN7NiRI/AAAAAAAACDQ/91tGftAXz-g/s1600/IMG_0279.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wF7r5xVs-Ig/UurdAN7NiRI/AAAAAAAACDQ/91tGftAXz-g/s1600/IMG_0279.JPG" height="484" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For a different look, I used the darker blend mode. I changed the color balance using fave app Color Thief. Finished it off with dark grit frame in Camera+. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QgW2pIm1kv8/UurdCX7klzI/AAAAAAAACDc/v732nqFV0Dk/s1600/IMG_0280.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QgW2pIm1kv8/UurdCX7klzI/AAAAAAAACDc/v732nqFV0Dk/s1600/IMG_0280.JPG" height="480" width="640" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is my favorite of the series, using yet another blend mode (worked
so fast, I'm not sure which one) but InstaFusion lets you see thumbnail
versions of the effects so it is easy to find one you like. The clock moving toward 12 lends a disturbing tension to this image. I finished
it off with Camera Awesome Frame, which has a muted effect on the photo.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L82qlf8cMDg/Uurc7Yd806I/AAAAAAAACDM/_HA4AiTB7Jk/s1600/IMG_0271.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-L82qlf8cMDg/Uurc7Yd806I/AAAAAAAACDM/_HA4AiTB7Jk/s1600/IMG_0271.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />Lynette Sheppardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02896463175847071518noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2213053686115559075.post-68541612795123248772013-12-22T13:17:00.000-08:002013-12-22T13:17:21.470-08:00Land of the Midnight SurfOne of my favorite newcomer apps is Color Thief. Basically, you choose a photo and choose another of your photos (or theirs or a website) and the app "steals" the color palette of that second photo and applies it to the first. Sometimes, it's weird, sometimes wonderful, and sometimes you just get to "see" differently.<br />
<br />
I was in Honolulu recently and shot this photo on the beach. I loved that the patterned surfboard tells you exactly where you are. It was a gray, cloudy day just before a storm. I just used Snapseed app for some basic optimizing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zGSgloohRjw/UrdR8TA1grI/AAAAAAAACCc/2wsRNqsHr_s/s1600/IMG_9003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zGSgloohRjw/UrdR8TA1grI/AAAAAAAACCc/2wsRNqsHr_s/s640/IMG_9003.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
And it is fine, as is. Then I started to flip through the Color Thief using other pix I'd taken the same day.This one was a little brighter from a sunnier photo. I like it as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yFzyr204Hok/UrdR71uS8qI/AAAAAAAACCY/aLNTxixoU-A/s1600/IMG_9005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yFzyr204Hok/UrdR71uS8qI/AAAAAAAACCY/aLNTxixoU-A/s640/IMG_9005.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
A more monochromatic shot yielded this faded, vintage look. Notice we lost some detail in the clouds, so if I really loved this I would probably go into Blender and paint in clouds from the original after desaturating it so as to match the tone. I wasn't enamored enough of this effect to do that, however.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wuvBdi7jpoc/UrdR73eoBFI/AAAAAAAACCU/No70mlZ7tU0/s1600/IMG_9008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wuvBdi7jpoc/UrdR73eoBFI/AAAAAAAACCU/No70mlZ7tU0/s640/IMG_9008.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I actually like this one a great deal. I don't mind the cloud detail being gone - the image is already pretty surreal and it just adds to the strange and moody feeling.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AsNSzkyMDsA/UrdSFmXKNAI/AAAAAAAACCs/OJHJKdx71iA/s1600/IMG_9011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AsNSzkyMDsA/UrdSFmXKNAI/AAAAAAAACCs/OJHJKdx71iA/s640/IMG_9011.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I let Color Thief use the heavy blue purple tones from an aquarium shot to almost make a day-to-night effect. I liked it but it needed something to really make it feel like night. Laminar app (formerly called Iris) has a vintage effect called Space - I added it and used a mask so it just showed in the sky and sea area. Voila. Land of The Midnight Surf which is my favorite of the series.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-usJJ68Rjl4M/UrdSE1azOiI/AAAAAAAACCo/sflZokSwdSg/s1600/IMG_9031.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-usJJ68Rjl4M/UrdSE1azOiI/AAAAAAAACCo/sflZokSwdSg/s640/IMG_9031.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
Warning: it is possible (read likely) to use up a lot of time playing with this app. It is just so darn much fun to discover all the ways color can completely change an image. I have to budget the amount of time I play with this or whole days can be lost. It's that addicting.Lynette Sheppardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02896463175847071518noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2213053686115559075.post-17152549357801364802013-11-23T18:03:00.000-08:002013-11-23T18:03:05.921-08:00Ti-riffic iPhone SubjectsI love Ti (or Ki as we call it in Hawaiian.) The colorful leaves of this plant never fail to seduce me into admiring them. Last week, I splurged on them - the gift that keeps on giving. Ki leaves symbolize protection from harm and many island homes (including ours) have Ki plants surrounding them.<br />
<br />
This is a straight abstract closeup with Snapseed for optimization and Touch Retouch to remove some debris spots. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tlTHPkAyyps/UpFakAWLWoI/AAAAAAAACB4/lXTY9sgyMmg/s1600/IMG_7768.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tlTHPkAyyps/UpFakAWLWoI/AAAAAAAACB4/lXTY9sgyMmg/s640/IMG_7768.JPG" width="480" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love the purples in these leaves - no fancy apping except Snapseed to optimize.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BsVzyJzHHUQ/UpFaWwzX9DI/AAAAAAAACBg/Yxv-sfpMLm8/s1600/IMG_7477.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BsVzyJzHHUQ/UpFaWwzX9DI/AAAAAAAACBg/Yxv-sfpMLm8/s640/IMG_7477.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>

These leaves were covered with dew in the morning. Snapseed and Camera+ apps.<br />

Then I got a little more abstract and app-happy. I used Average Cam Pro - 8 exposures moving the camera slightly to get a painterly effect for the last 2 images. Since I love abstraction, these may be my favorites. (Of this shoot anyway.)<br />
<br />

Still, I shot lots of photos and am just now able to start going through them all. I'm working backwards from now, so the first shots are from my time at the fabulous <i>Creative Photography For The Soul</i> taught by the incomparable Jack Davis. (Next year is almost full already, so if you are interested, I suggest you check out his website here.)<br />
<br />
This experiential photo seminar takes place right on my home turf here in Moloka`i, Hawai`i. It's always a delightful challenge to photograph your own back yard in a new way. Thanks to my new iPhone 5S and ever changing apps, I feel up to it. Here's a few from the week.<br />
<br />
These agave leaves were apped in Snapseed and Dynamic Light. Color is courtesy of Color Thief, one of my new favorite apps.<br />

As many of you know, I love painting on my photos. And Foolproof is an app that allows you control of the paintbrush. Unlike Painteresque or Artista Oil apps (both of which I like very much), Foolproof has you creating every brush stroke rather than having it done for you. So each rendition is one of a kind. Here are a few examples.<br />
<br />
This boat floats just off the shore at the Kapuaiwa Palm Grove in Moloka`i, Hawai`i. It has been photographed by countless folks over the years (and in every kind of light by Dewitt and me.) This is a whole new look when painted in Foolproof.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-inJKIwRRWew/UgFDDctxuUI/AAAAAAAACAA/U3pO7mLEhog/s1600/IMG_1977.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="486" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-inJKIwRRWew/UgFDDctxuUI/AAAAAAAACAA/U3pO7mLEhog/s640/IMG_1977.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I like abstract works of art and enjoyed "painting" this ocean scene. The color palette is striking - and all from the original photo.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Gal pal Theresa was photographing with me on the beach, so of course, I had to take a photo of her in her element. Then I painted her in Foolproof.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o6AlbWmQa8g/UgFDDf7dVeI/AAAAAAAACAE/FcwdMgNung8/s1600/IMG_1973.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o6AlbWmQa8g/UgFDDf7dVeI/AAAAAAAACAE/FcwdMgNung8/s640/IMG_1973.jpg" width="486" /></a></div>
<br />
My favorite of our beach day is this minimalist scene of a celadon wave breaking on the golden sand under an azure sky. I liked the original photo and I LOVE the painted one. Foolproof Art Studio is my app of the day.<br />

I am feeling so inspired! Check out these latest flower portraits. <br />
<br />
Katrina Pruett shares this lovely composition called Tiny Flowers. By her own admission, it's one of those "extreme app" results. She started with two photos from slightly different angles of the same tiny flowers. Blender (which made unexpected color changes). Photo Fx for one of the diffusing filters. Then Toon Camera to reverse a bit of the fuzziness. Lastly Pic Grunger for texture. This is one of iPhone Diva's favorites. I gotta try Katrina's recipe.<br />

John Derby was awarded "Mark of Excellence" for this lovely Iris photo in the I Shot It photo competition sponsored by Leica. His wife grew the beautiful bloom named interestingly enough "Starship Enterprise".

For this vibrant lotus shot, Katrina again used a number of apps. Here's how she did it "Snap seed. Touch retouch to remove debris in the water. Laminar pro (can't recall why I ran it through that). Then a new one to me - Jazz. That put the red streaks and red tint in the background which I kinda like."<br />

I took a Fourth of July walk with gal pals Theresa and Karen. The flowers were out in full regalia. Pink Indian Paintbrush decorated this granite boulder as we tramped to Lake Winnemucca in the Mokulumne Wilderness high in the California Sierra Nevada.. Snapseed, Camera+, Camera Awesome.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Dewitt and I were returning from a trip when we pulled over abruptly for this field of sunny blossoms. I love sunflowers - they seem to have personalities, each and every one. This is a straight iPhone shot using Pro HDR. And I'm sure I will app it in the future as well.<br />

While celebrating the Fourth by traversing a favorite trail in the HIgh Sierra, my girlfriends and I came across a wildflower meadow in full bloom. Snapseed, Tiffen Photo FX, Camera +.<br />

I have hardly had time to process any I've taken - here are a few.<br />
Three roses worked with Snapseed, Camera+, and Camera Awesome.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wj_bycUOEKw/UdMpg-C8GbI/AAAAAAAAB9o/Kh4mEfIAWuI/s800/IMG_0095.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wj_bycUOEKw/UdMpg-C8GbI/AAAAAAAAB9o/Kh4mEfIAWuI/s640/IMG_0095.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
The olloclip macro was used for detail of this freesia. Camera+, Snapseed, Touch Retouch.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UobieJ7vNfE/UdMphBZSqbI/AAAAAAAAB-E/NLLJYLpZNbY/s800/IMG_0438+pshp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UobieJ7vNfE/UdMphBZSqbI/AAAAAAAAB-E/NLLJYLpZNbY/s640/IMG_0438+pshp.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
This wild rose on the shore of Lake Tahoe was shot with ProHDR and processed using Snapseed and Camera Awesome.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QKlWOBUFevo/UdMphBEsjnI/AAAAAAAAB9s/URvjNetM3yg/s800/IMG_1235.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QKlWOBUFevo/UdMphBEsjnI/AAAAAAAAB9s/URvjNetM3yg/s640/IMG_1235.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
The Olloclip macro lens showing just a detail of a flower whose name I've forgotten. Processed in Snapseed and Camera +.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yE0ZekTymNU/UdMphZlqNfI/AAAAAAAAB94/9nN_8N2FqUM/s800/IMG_1445.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yE0ZekTymNU/UdMphZlqNfI/AAAAAAAAB94/9nN_8N2FqUM/s640/IMG_1445.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
This photo was created using what I jokingly refer to as the freezer app. One of my iphoneography pals, Sara Howell, has frozen blossoms and then photographed them. Taking a page from her playbook, (thanks Sara), I froze these petals in a clear pyrex dish, then photographed them. Snapseed and Photoshop Touch were the "in iPad" apps. You can bet I'll be doing a lot more of these.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AZVro1pkNt8/UdMphsK6PbI/AAAAAAAAB98/SXp29Dy1ieo/s800/IMG_2087.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AZVro1pkNt8/UdMphsK6PbI/AAAAAAAAB98/SXp29Dy1ieo/s640/IMG_2087.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
OK everyone, I'm looking forward to seeing some of your flower photos! Enjoy the summertime blooms.Lynette Sheppardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02896463175847071518noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2213053686115559075.post-19834064482821367132013-05-16T23:31:00.001-07:002013-05-16T23:31:18.398-07:00Haunting Beauty on Kalaupapa Peninsula, Moloka`iOne of the most beautiful, heart wrenching places on Earth is Kalaupapa peninsula, Moloka`i, Hawai`i where people with Hansen's disease (leprosy) were exiled, until a cure was finally discovered. We were blessed to be hosted by dear friends for a couple of days to immerse ourselves. Here are a few iPhone memories.<br />

I love the Abstract Expressionist school of painting and Katrina Pruett's latest work reminds me of that.<br />
<br />
For apps, here's what she used. Snapseed, Touch Retouch to eliminate scratches, ProHDR and Photogene for framing. On photo #3, she used Glaze for texture. Enjoy!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-66jX00F5_RM/UYSH73QNCRI/AAAAAAAAB7k/LSXV-xfZ6Wo/s1600/katrina+2_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="530" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-66jX00F5_RM/UYSH73QNCRI/AAAAAAAAB7k/LSXV-xfZ6Wo/s640/katrina+2_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<br />
With this art experiment, she went all out. She used a collage app, among her usual favorites. Can you guess which one? Which collage app is your favorite?
